BBFC - Certification

U = Films with this certification would be suitable for anyone 4+ years. They should be set within a positive moral framework and counterbalance any threat/violence/horror with reassuring themes. Any threat/violence/horror should be extremely 'mild' and not cause anxiety towards young viewers.

PG = Describes general viewing films, which should be suitable for 8+, though there is no restriction on what age you can enter without an accompanying adult. Some scenes may be unsuitable for particularly sensitive children, and moderate violence is only prohibited if essential in context.

12A/12 = No one younger than 12 can view the film without an accompanying adult. 12 certification only applies to video puchasing. Scenes in these films may be unsuitable for anyone under the age of 12. Any sequences with controversial factors (drugs/violence/imitable behaviour etc.) should be brief and not go into detail.

15 = Films certified as this may portray violence, drug use, horror and imitable behaviour without great detail and only if necessarily appropriate. No themes are prohibited and there are no constraints on language, though discrimination is still disallowed. In 15 certified films, scenes can have more detail including aspects such as drug use, violence or imitable behaviour, though cannot condone it.

18 = A film with certification is allowed to almost portray and theme/scene within their film. Constraints only apply if the material has violated a criminal law or been produced through the commission of a criminal offence, the film may be harmful to individual in society through endorsing or favouring immoral acts such as sexualise violence. Also unnecessary explicit scenes of sexuality are considered inappropriate and prohibited.
